Final Fantasy Tactics: Best Starting Party & Early Builds

TL;DR

  • Start Ramza as Squire for Move +1 and Focus; push Chemist early so everyone can learn Potion and Phoenix Down.
  • Follow Mustadio's Chapter 4 quest to unlock Beowulf and Dragon Reis; those fights want ~level 50 with high Speed and movement.
  • After Beowulf you get the Aquarius Zodiac Stone to trigger Construct 8; transform Reis to human then recruit Cloud with Materia Blade +.
  • Mid-game: prioritize Monk, Ninja, Samurai and Items on multiple units; JP-farm by swapping jobs during random encounters.

What You Need to Know First

You only have five core slots in most battles, so early flexibility matters more than min-max perfection. The secret characters change what your late-game looks like, but unlocking them has hard prerequisites — pay attention to chapters, quest triggers, and item requirements.

Minimum prerequisites table:

ItemEffectWhere to Get
Mustadio in partyStarts Beowulf/Reis questlineRecruit via main story events (pre-Chapter 4)
Aquarius Zodiac StoneTriggers Construct 8 awakeningReward from Beowulf questline (return to Goug)
Materia Blade +Boosts Cloud's combatMount Bervenia highest tile after Treasure Hunter proc
Potion / Phoenix Down (learned)Consumable use as secondary abilityLearn from Chemist job
Flower (for Reis)Required to progress Reis transformationBuy from flower girl at Sal Ghidos

Essential role checklist (who does what early):

RoleBest JobsSecondary Ability
Tank / FrontlineKnight, MonkItems, White Magic
Physical DPSNinja, Monk, SamuraiDual Wield, Counter
Magical DPSSummoner, Black MageItems, Time Magic
Support / HealerWhite Mage, Time MageItems, Black Magic
UtilityThief, OratorMovement, Steal

A couple of practical notes you won't find in a manual: teach Items early on as a secondary ability — Potion and Phoenix Down saved my run more times than a lucky crit. Also, if a quest says "Chapter 4," get your party to at least the recommended level for the fights (details below).

Step-by-Step Guide

This is the order I follow when I want a clean, reliable early-game setup and to unlock every secret recruit without grief.

  1. Early job roadmap (Chapters 1–2)

    1. Start Ramza as Squire. Learn Move +1 and Focus early; Focus is your JP battery when you can't attack.
    2. Push one unit to Chemist ASAP so multiple characters can learn Potion and Phoenix Down as a secondary ability.
    3. Train a Squire → Knight progression for a durable frontline. Have a White Mage with Items backup and a Black Mage for AoE.
  2. Recommended early party (example roles)

  1. How to unlock Beowulf and Dragon Reis (Chapter 4 trigger)

    1. Make sure Mustadio is in your party and progress to Chapter 4.
    2. Visit the Clockwork City of Goug for the steel ball cutscene to start the chain.
    3. Read "The Haunted Mine" rumor at the Mining Town of Gollund tavern.
    4. Complete the four-battle sequence north of Lesalia. These fights favor ~level 50 characters with high Speed and movement.

Warning: keep Dragon Reis alive during the final Colliery Shaft battle. Using a Ninja with Items secondary and X-Potions gets you there fast.

  2. Construct 8 and Aquarius Zodiac Stone

    1. After Beowulf's questline completes you receive the Aquarius Zodiac Stone.
    2. Return to Goug with the stone to trigger Construct 8's awakening cutscene — he uses math-based attacks similar to the Arithmetician.

  1. Transforming Reis and recruiting Cloud

    1. Progress to Trade City of Sal Ghidos in Chapter 4 and read relevant rumors at Zeltennia Castle.
    2. Buy a flower from the flower girl at Sal Ghidos (required for Reis and Cloud triggers).
    3. Battle Construct 7 at Nelveska Temple. The Construct 7 fight needs level 60+ characters; focus on ending Construct 7 — it revives at 1 HP and wants one last blow.
    4. After Reis becomes human, return to Goug for Cloud's summoning cutscene. To get Materia Blade +, visit Mount Bervenia with a Treasure Hunter proc (learned via Chemist) and step on the highest tile.
  2. Byblos and endgame monster allies

    1. Reach the final Orbonne Monastery battles, then check the Port City of Warjis tavern to unlock Midlight's Deep.
    2. In Midlight's Deep you face ten dark levels with hidden doors. Keep Byblos alive in the final encounter with Lahabrea to recruit it.
  3. Mid-game to late-game progression (Chapters 2–4+)

    1. Make Monk your mid-game melee: Chakra for self-heal and Revive helps carry fights.
    2. Unlock Ninja and Samurai for physical burst, Mime and Calculator for magical/combo builds.
    3. Farm JP by switching jobs when doing random encounters; prioritize jobs you plan to use endgame like Ninja/Tailwind/Time Magic.

Endgame notes: aim to teach Move +3 and Teleport to units who won't even use those jobs long-term — those movement tools save hours of micro and feels like cheating when you own the map.

Pro Tips

  • Teach Items on multiple party members early. You don't need a dedicated Chemist sitting out of fights — a Knight or Monk with Potion and Phoenix Down changes the momentum in long maps.
  • Use Focus when you can't attack to stack JP. It's the fastest way to unlock key secondary abilities without repeating battles.
  • For Beowulf/Reis fights bring a Ninja with Throw and a Time Mage with Haste. Speed and reach beat raw HP in those scripted encounters.
  • When farming JP, swap a high-level unit into the job you want to level and deliberately take the XP/JP. It's faster than grinding in place; treat random encounters like a training montage.
  • Don't sleep on Treasure Hunter for Mount Bervenia. One correct tile with the proc = Materia Blade +, which makes Cloud far less mid and more carry.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Expecting secret recruits to appear automatically — many require specific NPCs (Mustadio), items (flower, Aquarius Zodiac Stone), or reading particular tavern rumors.
  • Putting all healing on one White Mage and not letting others learn Potion/Phoenix Down; single-point failure in long dungeons.
  • Rushing Construct 7 at Nelveska Temple underleveled. That fight revives, so bring level 60+ and focus fire.
  • Ignoring movement abilities like Teleport and Move +3; maps punish slow parties and those skills save HP and time.
